Fire and Smoke Damper Inspections

The Joint Commission and NFPA require the periodic inspection of fire and smoke dampers to ensure that the dampers are operable.

For all dampers: (Fusible Link Dampers, Pneumatic Operated Dampers, and Electronic Operated Dampers):

• Provide appropriate dust containment to conform to your hospital's infection control policy and procedures, as well as accepted JCAHO and AIA standards, through the proper use of containment cubes, negative air machines and HEPA vacuums.
• Check for proper operation of each damper by actuating the damper mechanism. (Actuate, and visually inspect operations).
• Lubricate and/or adjust each damper as necessary.
• Inspect fusible link for signs of cracks, wear, etc. Replace as necessary.
• Check condition of hardware (springs, clips, hooks, louvers, linkage, rods, etc.). Determine need for replacement or repair as necessary.
• Check for excessive dirt, dust, rust or foreign matter. Clean all areas with HEPA vacuums.
• Check condition of ductwork.
• Report any unsafe conditions to the Engineering Department immediately.
• Provide photo documentation to document the need for any future repair needs.
• Record information on inventory/inspection sheets and Summary Report (partial copy attached)
• Place damper ID tag at access panel, ceiling "T" bar, or preferred location, and on the damper itself.
• For any electronic-controlled dampers, perform all inspections in the presence of the fire alarm vendor.
